The students' perceptions of elderly people were analyzed following lectures about gerontological nursing. The participants were 162 nursing students in the second year of a four-year college program who gave written consent to participate in the study. The participants were asked to describe their thoughts about elderly people on the specified paper at a specified time, and then a content analysis was conducted.\n As a result, we obtained 2,352 data points which were then classified into 29 categories with 437 sub-categories. The 29 categories were also classified into three categories: \"thoughts on the elderly related to life experience, \"\"thoughts on the elderly related to previous knowledge\" and \"thoughts on the elderly related to both.\" Of these three, the category that produced the most data was \"thoughts on the elderly related to life experience.\" It was suggested that at the early stage of studying gerontological nursing, the students' own experiences significantly\naffected their perceptions of elderly people. It can be inferred that because focal points to recall were narrowed by the content of study, the data were categorized into the small number 29.
