| 内容記述 | Just over 25 years ago, Allan Bloom’s The Closing of the American Mind was published and became the most successful education book in American history. It preached many of the same things that Donald Trump does: local exceptionalism the “wisdom” of excluding others while providing an ahistorical explanation of the nation’s ills along with a deceptively simple recipe for recovery. Trumpism, Brexit, and the coming-topower of several reactionary leaders are all indicators of a trend of populist fearmongering and xenophobia sweeping select segments of the globe. The pull of ethnocentrism and scapegoating becomes strong during times of economic turbulence, therefore bad ideas are worth revisiting, so that their dangerous foolishness can be exposed. It is easy for impressionable young people to be misled. As Kenneth Burke wrote: “A compensatory increase in sensuality generally accompanies a loss of faith in the reasonableness of a society’s purposes. People try to combat alienation by immediacy, such as the senses alone provide”(Attitudes, 218). We educators must remain vigilantly aware of the danger signals. | |||||||

| 内容記述 | ちょうど25 年前，アラン・ブルームの『The Closing of the American Mind』が出版され，アメリカ史上最も成功した教育書となった．この本は，ドナルド・トランプが説いていることと多くのじことを説いている．それは，ローカルな例外主義，他者を排除する「知恵」であり，その一方で，国の病について非歴史的な説明と，欺瞞に満ちた単純な回復のためのレシピを提供している．トランプ主義，ブレグジット，そして何人かの反動的な指導者の台頭はすべて，ポピュリストによる恐怖政治と外国人嫌いが世界の特定の地域を席巻している傾向を示すものだ．エスノセントリズムとスケープゴーティングの引力は，経済的な混乱時に強くなる．多感な若者が惑わされるのは簡単だ．ケネス・バークはこう書いている．「官能性の代償的な増大は，一般に，社会的目的の合理性に対する信頼の喪失を伴う．人々は，感覚だけが与えてくれる即時性によって疎外感と闘おうとする」（Attitudes,218）．私たち教育者は，危険なサインを常に意識していなければならない． | |||||||
